The village of Firbeck - 'Woodland Stream' - can be found on the extreme South Yorkshire border with North Nottinghamshire. It has several claims to fame including it's association with the St Leger family who became known around the world because of the famous classic horse race held at nearby Doncaster.
As well as being within walking distance of Sandbeck, the home of the Earl of Scarborough the village also has it's own claim to fame through Firbeck Hall. Although the Hall has been sadly neglected over recent years it was once the haunt of many famous people. In fact It is said that the Hall was visited by the famous flyer Amy Johnson and the then Prince of Wales and Wallis Simpson.
The Hall was used by Sheffield Royal Hospital and the Royal Air Force during World War II when the aerodrome was used by Lysander squadrons.
Nowadays Firbeck is a scenic rural village nestling in a valley some 6 miles from the urban development of Worksop and 11 miles from Rotherham. The village, the Black Lion pub and restaurant together with Firbeck Social Club itself are popular among lovers of the countryside - particularly with ramblers and recreational cyclists.
The Green Lady The story of the Green Lady of Firbeck Hall refers to the Civil War and a young lady whose Roudhead lover was killed by her brother. The legend is that she threw herself into the lake and drowned - when her body was recovered it was covered in green slime. Over the years a number of scary reports and sitings have been made..
